Genesis 12:3 and the Christian’s Call to Discernment

This paper critically examines the misuse of Genesis 12:3 among many contemporary evangelicals who interpret it as a mandate for unconditional political support of the modern state of Israel. Through biblical exegesis, theological analysis, and engagement with both Old and New Testament texts, this paper seeks to demonstrate that the Abrahamic promise was always Christ-centred and global in scope; intended to bless all nations through faith, not ethnic privilege or political allegiance. It further explores the biblical Doctrine of the Remnant, the eschatological hope for Israel, and the potential misunderstandings introduced by Christian Zionism. The paper argues for a more faithful and discerning Christian posture: one that honours biblical truth, prays for the peace of Israel, maintains gospel witness to all peoples, and upholds the Church’s primary calling to the Great Commission.

This paper is written in humble submission to the authority of God’s Word and with reverence for His sovereign purposes. My prayer is that it refl ects a faithful handling of Scripture and will encourage thoughtful and charitable engagement, especially among brothers and sisters in Christ who may hold diff ering perspectives.
